Rain Accumulation Study

A study was conducted to estimate rain accumulation within the Mississippi river basin. The study was based on composite radar rain data from WSI provided by the Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC). The WSI rain data provide a 2km per pixel image of the entire United States every fifteen minutes. Each pixel in the image is an 8-bit value that indicates a radar reflectivity value. Rain pixels were classified as either stratiform or convective based on the values of the surrounding pixels. Radar reflectivity values were mapped to a rain rate based on the classification. River basin data was used to determine which basin each rain pixel belonged to. Hourly, daily and monthly rainfall statistics were generated for each river basin. Images were produced to show accumulated rainfall.
